Echo was a forest nymph, cursed by Hera to only be able to repeat the last words she heard. Narcissus was a beautiful hunter from Thespiae in Beotia. On one of his hunting trips, Echo saw him and immediatly fell in love. She followed him on his hunting trip but remained out of sight. When Narcissus became separated from his hunting party, Echo took it as an opportunity, and with a little miscommunication between the two, she believed he felt the same for her as she did for him. Narcissus was disgusted, and Echo, scorned, ran away. She didn't go far though, and, still in love, continued to follow Narcissus. Nemesis was displeased with Narcissus, and cursed him so that next time he knelt to drink from a pond, he fell in love with his own reflection. Echo could do nothing but watch as he withered away, refusing to leave his beloved reflection. He died there, and in his place a lily grew. Echo, being immortal, did not die from the grief, but her body did fade, and her bones turned to stone. Now all that remains is her voice, which can still be heard calling back to you from caves and wells.
