Arachne was a sheperds daughter, and an excellent weaver. She would boast of her great abilities, bragging that she was better even than Athena herself, and eventually challenged Athena to a contest to see who was better. Athena, enraged by this mortals pride and hoping to teach her a lesson, accepted the challenge. There are many versions of the story debating what each of them wove for the contest. The main two versions are as follows: One in which Athena depicts gods putting mortals with hubris in their place, and Arachne weaving gods abusing mortals, and the other, where Athena wove her contest with Poseidon, and Arachne wove Zeus pursuing various mortal women. Arachne was voted the winner of the contest by the village, and Athena, infuriated, transformed Arachne into the first spider, cursing her to weave forevermore.
